The Cambridge Brewhouse, King Street, Cambridge

Twitter is a great place, it is where I nearly always hear about new restaurant openings and where I heard about The Cambridge Brewhouse. I'd heard whisperings a few weeks before, and then Cambridge News picked up on it and by opening night on Wednesday Twitter was awash with pictures of their delicious food.

The Cambridge Brewhouse is on 1 King Street, which is a pub that has suffered from being not that great. It was The Bun Shop for a long time, a shabby looking place which never really held any appeal for me, then just over a year ago it was refurbished and turned into The Jolly Scholar - I blogged about it back then - the food was okay and the service was really quite terrible. I heard many more bad reviews about it after that, and it closed last year.

So now is the turn of The Cambridge Brewhouse, and things are definitely looking up. They brew their own beer as well as having a selection of ales from independent brewers, they smoke their own cheese and meat and make their own sausages. The food is pub style with a twist and they do a selection of 'British Tapas' - little light bites to go with your beer or as a starter.

I started off with some Shepherd's Pie Croquettes which aren't the most photogenic things, but they were tasty. Very crispy on the outside with soft centre made up of mash and traditional lamb shepherd's pie filling. I would have liked the mash to be around the outside and a meat filling in the centre but the Mr did point out the logistics of this might have been pretty hard to achieve. So I'm just fussy.

There are a few vegetarian options on the menu, from either the tapas section or the mains, and you can have sandwiches in the day time too. Mr had a butternut squash pearl barley risotto served with a little pot of the house smoked cheddar. Again, it wasn't too photogenic (hence no picture) but it was delicious, nice and generous on the cheese and lots of herbs to go with the squash and pearl barley.

I had the pie of the day which was lamb and rosemary - served with either mash or chips and red cabbage, and importantly - extra gravy! The pastry was crispy and flaky and the filling slow cooked and tender, perfect. The chips were unfortunately a little bit soggy, only a few of them were crispy.

Feeling full we almost didn't have pudding, but all the food was 50% off for the soft launch, so it would have been rude not to. I had my favourite - Sticky Toffee Pudding which was sickly, sweet, sticky and perfect. It didn't look as drenched in sauce as others do, so I was worried it would be dry, but the sponge was perfectly soft and there was plenty of sauce to go with it.

Mr had the 'Winter Berry Eton Mess' - as far as we could tell it came with raspberries, which aren't particularly wintry, and in fact there are no berries around in the winter anyway. Maybe a winter Eton mess would be better if it was served with stewed or preserved fruit of some kind. Despite the fruit, the meringue was chewy and crispy, it had a generous amount of cream and the out of season raspberries were at least sweet.

With 50% off a beer and a glass of wine it came to £23, so at normal prices it is about average for a meal in Cambridge (I know, it is expensive here!). We'll definitely go back again, the food is interesting and I like that they have their own microbrewery and smokery.

You can find the menu on their website and also follow them on Twitter for updates.

new pictures and freshening up for summer

I've been a busy little jewellery maker lately, I've added some new designs to my shops and I have also been reshooting pictures (helped by this lovely bright weather) for the summer wedding season.

I've just had a very nice parcel of vintage beads arrive so there will be some new vintage designs very soon, including more flowers!

buttony goodness

I always like it when someone comes to me with an interesting custom order, I made a button necklace for my colleague before Christmas, she gave it as a gift and loved it so much that she asked me to make another for her.

I love this idea, the design is relatively simple but looks really lovely on, I am wondering if I can start a new line in my shop of button necklaces?

I think some button shopping is in order! More pictures here

summery jewellery and a promise!

I have mainly been making lots and lots of jewellery lately so my blog and foodie activities have been minimal..

I have lots of new jewellery in the shop and my bridal line is expanding by  the week.

Promise I'll be back with something foodie for your tastebuds soon!

The lovely butterfly necklaces are made with porcelain butterflies from Karen at Hodge Podge Arts - she has been so helpful creating these for me, they look beautiful worn, I have kept a purple one for myself!

Delicately different

Something new in my Etsy shop this week, and a little different...

I had a little bit too much fun making silver teardrops a couple of weeks ago and I had a lovely box full of differing sizes in this delicate shape. I was looking at them and struck upon the idea of making asymmetrical earrings, they are perfect for this!

I put the teardrops with some beautiful sparkly mystic quartz briolettes, and then added some vintage millefiori beads. I have a whole mixture of the beads and they are all slightly different, so were also begging to go into this design.

I am really pleased with the soft colours and the quirky design.

I hope you like them too!

Thinking of Spring..

We've had a dusting of snow recently, with more forecast next week, but I just can't help thinking of Spring right now!

I have redesigned some old favourites, these Kiwi Earrings, now in beautiful golden brass (they were previously in copper), and the earwires are handmade by me.

I think these beads look like Jolly Ranchers, don't you? :)

In my Etsy shop!

Complete!

I love making long necklaces, its nice to have a long (pardon the pun) project to do, and they make lovely sitting on the sofa type beading.

This necklace is made from my favourite luxurious chunky brass chain which is adorned with little pink daises, glass saucers and two rare vintage chandelier crystals.

Cotton Candy Necklace now in my Etsy Shop

back to normal + new jewellery

Well I'm back again now, I had a few days away plus a couple of days off work to work on my jewellery. I didn't manage any bobby pins but I have lots of new things for the shop anyhow!

Thankfully Tuesday brought four lovely packages of beads so I could get on with some new designs. I have updated my Kiwi earrings with new earwires and also listed these beautifully bright Emerald earrings made with little vintage glass flowers.

My favourite from my new haul of supplies are these little porcelain Japanese flowers, I had planned these as being for bobby pins but they are so beautiful that I can't part with them! Ideas on a postcard (or comments box hehe) for what I can do with them please.

I've got two more pairs of earrings to list plus a gorgeous multicolour bracelet too, so keep checking back!

Hard worker

I've been very determined so far this week, at keeping my shop flowing with new lovelies.
I seem to have been inspired by the slightly more thundery weather of this week, these look particularly rustic to me. All of these are in my Etsy shop.

all new

Happily I've recently had a creative spurt and I've been creating new things for the last week or so, which is brilliant as I had a funny little 'jewellers block' before that, which was very frustrating.

I'm really enjoying getting stuck into the autumn and winter seasons now, and its even better now that its looking a lot more seasonal outside.

First of all I have a new website, here.
I'm really pleased with how it has turned out, thank you to my other half for designing it - please have a look at his website, sensesstudios.

New pieces are in my Etsy shop, among my favourite are these Coal Earrings made with dark oxidized silver and soft grey lucite beads. I have recently received some beautiful new earring wires from Metamorph on Etsy and they look just great with my vintage beads, I love handmade findings.

handmade of the month

I've put a new little feature on my blog, my favourite handmade item of the month.

I have big favourites list on Etsy, as its impossible for a day to go by without finding something else that makes you want to forgo paying bills to buy. I hope you enjoy looking at my monthly picks, they are at the side of my blog, just below my Etsy Shop link.

I've squeezed in Angharad's beautiful blue clutch for the July pick, watch out for a new item in August.

Enjoy!
